MOVIE REVIEW:
Why is there a need to produce a sequel to
the 2008 Disney Channel Original Movie Camp Rock? Because
the musical TV movie was successful, that’s why. And
while stars Demi Lovato (she has released two albums since)
and the Jonas Brothers (if you are a young girl below 20 who
loves teenage pop music, you should be familiar with their
discography) are still in the fame game, why not? Look where
High School Musical brought Zac Efron.
So here we have the main story of Camp Rock
2, where Mitchie Torres (Lovato) returns to Camp rock to be
reunited with her friends during the summer holiday. That’s
about it for the plot, really. Oh, there is also a rival camp
who challenged the good guys to a show down of rock and roll,
in a reality TV style where the winning camp is decided by
popularity votes. Yes, that’s really about it for the
plot.
We have to admit, there is nothing to shout
about for this Disney Channel production – and why should
there be? The kids (and quite a number of teenagers too) are
watching this for the music, and its good looking stars, of
course. And that is precisely why director Paul Hoen and his
team of filmmakers have decided to focus on the music and
the good looking stars. The humour and jokes are decent, and
the there is nothing to stop viewers from laying back on a
weekend to enjoy something this frills free. You’d chuckle
as the Jonas Brothers’ tour van tumble into the lake,
you’d bop along as the camp residents sing and dance
to lively music, and you’d laugh as the junior rockers
make a fool out of their adult counterpart.
After listening to the countless number of
songs, viewers would be tempted to get a copy of the soundtrack
to sing along. Songs like “Brand New Day”, “It’s
On” and “This Is Our Song” are what define
wholesome goodness in the popular music scene. Besides, Lovato
and Jonas Brothers Joe, Kevin and Nick aren’t too bad
at singing too. It certainly helps that they project a wholesome
and clean image so parents can leave their kids to watch this
while they try to finish their infinite list of household
chores.
After establishing the fact that the story
is formulaic and predictable, we must also give credit to
the folks at Disney for coming up with this formula. It has
the power to keep viewers’ eyes glued to the screen.
Maybe it’s the more impressive sets (the success of
the first movie must have brought about a bigger budget for
its sequel), maybe it’s the catchy music and the fun
choreography, or maybe it’s just the kid in all of us
wanting to spend summer with our friends.
