MOVIE REVIEW:
Do you know much about the Hawaiian Ki'i statues?
What about “Funeral March of the Marionette” by
Goundo, the art of Chinese cut paper, Hiroshige Utagawa’s
artpiece Whirlpool and Waves and “William Tell Overture”
by Gioachino Rossini? What if your preschool kid comes up
to you and impresses you with knowledge about all this? You’d
be thankful for getting this DVD for him or her.
There
are three 24-minute episodes in this DVD. In “The Treasure
Behind The Little Red Door”, Rocket (the one which the
kids travel in every episode) discovers a treasure map that
leads to riches in Hawaii, but Big Jet (not very creative,
but that’s the villain for you) steals the map before
the treasure is found. In “Super Fast!”, the kids
discuss about a speeding device on Rocket until three little
pigs (can the creators get more kiddy than that?) on airplanes
go out of control in the skies. In “The Great Sky Race
rematch”, Big Jet smashes up Rocket's flying button
and plans its revenge on losing the last Great Sky Race. By
preventing Rocket from flying, the villain prepares to win
this race no matter what.
Before
you think the animation in this preschool series looks bland
and unattractive, you may want to sit down with the preschoolers
for one episode. It is amazing how information and fact are
weaved into the episodes, and with such interactivity. Young
viewers will be responding to the chants to launch Rocket
off. Along the way, viewers learn about art and classical
music the interesting way. Come on, who would want to learn
about famous artwork and high brow music from traditional
academic journals and messy music scores?
Of
course, while this works great for the toddlers, adults are
not exactly the target viewers of this DVD. The classical
tunes are sung to the lines of “We're off on a Treasure
hunt, we're off on a treasure hunt, we're not there yet, we
have to get the treasure behind the Little Red door.”
(Funeral March of the Marionette) and “Hurry up, hurry
up, get the pig pig pigs. Hurry up, hurry up, get the pig
pig pigs. Hurry up hurry up, get the pig pig pigs. Hurry up!
Get the pig pig pigs.” (William Tell Overture).
You
get the idea. But still, you may still want to watch some
episodes so that your preschool kid appears smarter than you.
