MOVIE REVIEW:
Something is very wrong here. Why is this male reviewer able to sit through an 89 minute Disney Channel Original Movie about, grasp your seats, a young princess who gets taken into custody by the titular Princess Protection Programme? Other than the fact that his webmaster has kindly volunteered this humble columnist to review this telemovie, he seriously doubts whether there is anything wrong with his preferred choice of movie genre.
In a plot that can only happen in a Disney production, an evil dictator threatens to take over the kingdom, a young princess (Demi Lovato from the very popular Disney TV movie Camp Rock) is put into the Princess Protection Programme. She is whisked to an agent’s house, where she befriends his daughter (Selena Gomez from the very popular Disney TV series Wizards of Waverly Place). The princess becomes, surprise, a regular teen with the help of her new friend. And in return, friendships are formed and a few good looking young guys are introduced into the love lives of these pretty young girls. Oh, how can we forget, it involves a bitchy competitor too.
This being a Disney production, expect all thing fluffy and family friendly. But what is it with this formula that has the producers going through the trouble of having a DVD of the already broadcast movie? Money, of course. Most things churned out by the House of Mouse are guaranteed money makers (let’s not forget a certain High School Musical and the franchise it spawned), so why leave this one out?
The two female leads are pleasant and agreeably likeable. The story packs a few chuckles here and there, with the adult actors more often than not making a fool of themselves. The pop saturated soundtrack will make teens rush to music stores to purchase the CD. The teeny boppy colours and costumes in the production will have viewers wish that they were the lives of these two characters. What else is stopping the company from milking more cash from this movie?
And in a pleasant surprise, we saw Jamie Chung (the only thing worth mentioning about the disastrous Dragonball Evolution) playing the bitchy girl who wants nothing but the princess crown. Call this reviewer biased, but she stands out from Gomez and Lovato. Maybe, just maybe, the fresh faced actress of Korean heritage is the reason why he managed to sit through the wholesome movie.
SPECIAL FEATURES :
The reason for this Code 3 DVD to be displayed on shelves is its so called exclusive special features. In Royal and Loyal BFFs, we see Gomez and Lovato, apparently real life best friends talking about how much fun they had on set in this eight minute clip. The other cast and crew give testament to how fun these two girls are on set too. The five minute A Royal Reality is a narration about what it takes to be a real princess. The interviewee India Oxenberg talks about her family heritage and dispels all myths that princesses sing and dance beautifully like those in Disney animated movies. The three minute "One And The Same" Music Video has the two lasses belting out their vocals in a nicely produced clip. Included are also Sneak Peeks of other Disney titles like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and The Princess and the Frog.
AUDIO/VISUAL:
The visual transfer of the movie is pristine, while you can choose to watch the show in either Dolby Digital 5.1 English, Spanish or Portugal audio tracks.
