"That Girl in Pinafore" Debuts at 16th Shanghai International Film Festival

You are the Apple of My Eye, a nostalgic and simple tale about first love took Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia and China by storm. So Young, Vicki Zhao’s debut movie, surpassed even Iron Man 3 in the box office. Now, Singaporean movie That Girl in Pinafore is debuting in the 16th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF)

By invitation from the SIFF, That Girl in Pinafore held its world premiere at Shanghai. Not only did it feature at a grade A film festival, That Girl in Pinafore presents Singapore during 1980-90s, offering insights into Singapore’s psyche. Two screenings were held at Starlight cinema and Shanghai cinema on 18th June and 20th June respectively.

As the distributor and producer of the movie, mm2 entertainment is excited to present That Girl in Pinafore at Shanghai. Producer, Eugene Lee expressed that it was an honor to be at the SIFF. The movie’s Shanghai debut puts Singaporean films on the path towards reaching Chinese audiences and strengthens Sino-Singapore collaboration opportunities.

One of the core investors in the film is Lafeng Entertainment Co., Ltd. Company Chairman Mr Chen Meilin said: “Investing in Singaporean films is not only a new business model, but it is also the future of regional film development. We look forward to a long term collaboration with Singapore’s mm2 entertainment in the next two years where we plan to develop, produce and distribute more Chinese films that will make their mark on the international market.”

The film's director, Mr Chai Yeewei said: “The highlight of the film is in its treatment of Singaporean folk music (known as ‘xinyao’). Interspersed within the movie are many classic xinyao melodies, whose unique qualities represent the character of Singapore in the 80s and 90s. The songs of famous singers Eric Moo, Li Fei Hui and Liang Wern Fook make appearances in the movie, of which 《走过年少》,《细水长流》,《一步一步来》 and《麻雀衔竹枝》are prominent. The film’s story brings out many things in teenagers – their passion for music, living without regrets, unease about the future and most notably the persistence of friendship and love. The film premiered at the Starlight Theatre, where director Chai Yeewei and the main cast met and interacted with the audience.

That Girl in Pinafore will be released in Singapore cinemas on 1st August – one week before Singapore’s National Day to celebrate the country’s 48th birthday.
