He attained international acclaim when he won an Oscar for Spirited Away in 2003 and a Golden Lion for lifetime achievement in 2005. The tribute screening will lead up to Hayao Miyazaki’s latest and final film, The Wind Rises, which will be released on 20 March in Singapore. The Wind Rises had topped the Japan’s Box Office for eight straight weeks, making it the highest-grossing Japanese film in Japan in 2013. As one of the most highly-anticipated films of the year, it received international acclaim from film critics. It garnered several prestigious awards, including nominations for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film, Annie Awards for Animated Feature Production and the Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year.

The Wind Rises is inspired by the true story of Jiro Horikoshi, the man who designed the nimble Zero fighter that Japan used to such deadly effect in World War II. The film chronicles the life of Jiro, who dreams of flying and designing beautiful airplanes, and depicts key historical events that impacted the world and the course of Jiro’s life. The Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, the Great Depression, the tuberculosis epidemic and Japan’s plunge into war. He meets and falls in love with Nahoko, grows and cherishes his friendship with his colleague Honjo. A brilliant innovator, Jiro leads the aviation world into the future. Miyazaki is inspired by engineer Jiro Horikoshi and author Tatsuo Hori in his creation of the fictional character Jiro—the center of the epic tale of love, perseverance, the challenges of living and making choices in a turbulent world.

The Wind Rises opens in Singapore on 20 March 2014.
