A historic first for Singapore at Cannes 2013 - Camera d'Or win for Anthony Chen's 'ILO ILO'!
Homegrown Singapore director Anthony Chen's first feature-length film 'ILO ILO' has come out of nowhere to beat some 18 other films to win the coveted Camera d'Or prize, awarded to the best feature film debut by a director.
ILO ILO was screened in the Director’s Fortnight sidebar programme, but the film's premiere was nearly marred by technical difficulties, including a power outage and the English and French subtitles disappearing and reappearing on the screen.
Despite the hiccups, the audiences not only stayed until the end, but they gave Mr Chen and his cast a 15-minute standing ovation.
Starring veteran MediaCorp actor Chen Tianwen, Malaysian actress Yeo Yann Yann, and award-winning Filipino actress Angeli Bayani, the film explores the relationship between a young boy and his family’s new Filipino maid during the 1997 Asian financial crisis.
This is however not Anthony's first time at Cannes. In 2007, his short film Ah Ma (Grandma) won a Special Mention in the Palme d’Or for Short Films competition.
ILO ILO has been picked up for local distribution by Golden Village Pictures and will open in Singapore at the end of August.

Set against the backdrop of the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis, the poignant story tells the relationship between a family and their Filipino maid. Written and directed by Chen, the movie stars Chen Tianwen and Yeo Yann Yann.
