Veteran Kung Fu star Lau Kar Leung has passed away at the age of 78 of leukemia.
A Shaw Bros veteran who has directed many successful martial-arts movies in the 70's and 80's, Lau has worked as an action choreographer, stuntman, director and actor in his career that spanned decades. Lau also has a brother who is also in the film industry, actor and choreographer Lau Kar-wing and Kill Bill's Gordon Liu who is also his adopted brother.
His most famous directorial work in later years was Jackie Chan's Drunken Master II whom he famously clashed with. Although he directed Drunken Master III subsequently, the results were embarassingly bad. Since then, the legendary star has been battling leukemia and his last prominent work was Tsui Hark's Seven Swords where he served as action choreographer and actor.
Lau was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Hong Kong Film Awards in 2010 for his contribution to the martial arts film genre. He is survived by his wife, former actress and solicitor Mary Jean Reimer and their two daughters.
