Teaser Trailer Revealed for VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS

The first teaser trailer for Luc Besson's sci-fi blockbuster VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS has been released. The director also launched the much-anticipated teaser via Facebook Live in London yesterday, followed by a live Q&A session. A series of new images, accompanied by little backstories about the world of VALERIAN were also revealed in the days leading up to the trailer debut.

One of the most exciting reveals was Rihanna's character in the film, which sees her performing on stage in a 1920s-inspired outfit. A first look at 'The Intruder' - the spaceship piloted by Valerian and Laureline that allows them to travel anywhere in space and time - was also shown for the first time. The film is based on classic French sci-fi graphic novel series "Valerian and Laureline" created by artist Jean-Claude Mézières and writer Pierre Christin, and stars Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne in its titular roles. The film is born out of director Luc Besson's ("The Fifth Element", "Lucy") passion for the "Valerian and Laureline" series, which he has loved since young. At the San Diego Comic-Con in July this year, Besson received a standing ovation from audiences after presenting first-look footage from his upcoming film.

With a budget of US$208 million, VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS is the most expensive non-US movie in cinematic history, and approximately 70% of its budget dedicated to special effects. The production has teamed up with several of the best VFX companies including Weta Digital ("Avatar", "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" trilogies), Industrial Light & Magic ("Star Wars") and Rodeo FX, the Canadian company responsible for the visual effects on the TV series "Game of Thrones". Principal photography commenced in Paris at the studios of La Cité du Cinéma in January this year and wrapped in June. Also starring in the film are Clive Owen, Rihanna, Ethan Hawke, Herbie Hancock, Rutger Hauer and Kris Wu.

Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are special operatives for the government of the human territories charged with maintaining order throughout the universe. Valerian has more in mind than a professional relationship with his partner - blatantly chasing after her with propositions of romance. But his extensive history with women, and her traditional values, drive Laureline to continuously rebuff him.

Under directive from their Commander (Clive Owen), Valerian and Laureline embark on a mission to the breathtaking intergalactic city of Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis comprised of thousands of different species from all four corners of the universe. Alpha's seventeen million inhabitants have converged over time - uniting their talents, technology and resources for the betterment of all. Unfortunately, not everyone on Alpha shares in these same objectives; in fact, unseen forces are at work, placing our race in great danger.

Virginie Besson-Silla is producing the film on behalf of EuropaCorp, while Fundamental Films, alongside BNP Paribas, Orange, Universum Film, Gulf Film, River Road Entertainment, Belga Films and TF1 Films Production are the main co-financiers of the movie.

VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS will be released on July 20, 2017 by Golden Village Pictures in Singapore. _____________
