The highly acclaimed Hong Kong category 3 movie SARA 《雏妓》 topped the box office chart in Hong Kong last weekend. The movie, starring Charlene Choi and Simon Yam, grossed a total of HKD $8,500,000 (approximately SGD $1.5 million) after playing in cinemas for merely a week, and emerges as the top movie at the cinemas since its opening.
SARA is releasing in Singapore on 26th March, with sneak previews from 20th - 22nd March. The movie is rated R21 with no cuts.
Besides the encouraging box office results in Hong Kong, Simon Yam and Charlene Choi had also previously won the Best Actor and Best Actress awards respectively at the Macau International Movie Festival. Charlene Choi is also nominated in the Best Actress category at the upcoming 34th Hong Kong Film Awards 2015 for her breakthrough performance in SARA. Results for the Hong Kong Film Awards will be announced on 19th April.
Directed by Herman Yau and produced by Chapman To, SARA explores the dark side of sex tourism in Asia. The film centers around journalist Sara Ho who travels to Chiang Mai Thailand, after her editor at the publishing company refuses to run a controversial piece she worked very hard on. At a bar in Chiang Mai, she chance upon a child prostitute named Dok-My and gets haunted by the dark memories of her own past.
