Like a good scare? Check out these upcoming horror movies
Singapore will be shaking in its boots with the release of these terrifying new horror movies coming out in September and October 2016. Featuring everything from a zombie tale with real brains through to the next installment in the infamous Japanese inspired Ring series, there will be enough spine-tingling moments and lashings of gore to entertain horror movie addicts of all persuasion.
The Girl With All The Gifts
Twenty years ago a fungus infected the world, stripping people of their mental abilities and turning them into hungries. But this is not your usual, run-of-the-mill zombie movie, with little plots and lots of brain munching corpses wandering the countryside. It has a unique storyline, well-developed characters, and a real message to impart.
Described as ‘original, thrilling and compelling’ and ‘a welcome shift from the focus of many zombie movies’ by critics, it tells the story of Melanie, a 10-year old infected by the fungus, who is basically the only hope for the future of mankind.
Combining an intelligent story with a genre generally considered to be schlock horror isn’t easy, but consensus is that The Girl With All The Gifts does it brilliantly. The movie will be shown on the big screens from the 29th of September and it is an adaptation from a Mike Carey novel.
Ouija: Origin of Evil
Something is wrong with Doris. Really, really wrong. Set in 1960s America, it tells the story of a family who scam people with séances, but when they add a new Ouija board prop to the business to make it more authentic and interesting, things start to get…well, seriously authentic and interesting, especially for Doris. A prequel to the 2014 hit, Ouija, this is a must for lovers of traditional horror films. It features lots of creepy special effects, demonic possession, up-the-spine chills, a truly scary child, and the usual slathering of thrills and spills. It may not be the most original storyline for a horror movie, but what it does within its category is done to perfection. Add in a few early laughs to get you relaxed and unaware of what’s to come, and you have the ideal prescription for an entertaining night out. Prepare to be startled from the 27th of October onwards.
Rings
The third film in the American-made franchise that sprang from the Japanese horror classic, the story is set 13 years after the events in The Ring. Its basic premise is that people who watch a particular video curse themselves to die within seven days unless they convince someone else to watch it and transfer the curse to him or herself. It’s like a chain letter; if you don’t pass it along you’re stuffed (or so they say). Anyway, a woman discovers her boyfriend has been watching the video and they find themselves in all sorts of strife trying to sort out the inevitable problems. It’s pretty much par for the course, but fans of the franchise will enjoy it nonetheless. And if you’re unaware of the Ring series, this movie will be a great place to start. The horror begins on the 10th of November. So it’s time to get your horror thrills on at the cinemas.
