SOUNDTRACK REVIEW:
One shouldn’t judge
a book by its cover, and in this case, we’d like to
tell you: Do not judge a CD by its cover. We weren’t
too impressed with the album art of this soundtrack to the
Chris Columbus directed movie about a geeky valedictorian
who announces his love for the school’s popular cheerleader.
Sure, putting Hayden Panettiere’s attractive half body
shot on the cover may help to assist a certain group of listeners,
but to quality music lovers like us? We weren’t too
impressed – initially.
You’ve got to check out the track listing
to realise there are some gems in this 15 track compilation.
Love music by English indie rock band The Kooks? Check. Love
music by American rap rock band Gym Class Heroes? Check. Love
music by American rock singer songwriter musician Alice Cooper?
Check. These are just some of the names you’d find on
this eclectic soundtrack filled with tunes appealing to a
wide audience.
The 53 minute album kicks off with a breezy
“Forget Me” performed by Violet Columbus. The
laidback mood of this tune will remind you of the good ol’
school days when things were simpler and happier. Swedish
rock band The Hives then takes over and raps things up with
“Try It Again” with an increased amount of energy
and zest. And fellow Swedish musicians The Perishers cools
things down with the very pleasant “Come Out of the
Shade”. For something more psychedelic, American R &
B and soul singer songwriter will soothe your gentle nerves
with the calming “Crusin’”, a track brings
a smile every time we play it. British American rock band
Foreigner makes you feel alive and kicking with the youthful
“Feels Like The First Time”. “Forget Me”
performed by American singer songwriter is an apt dynamically
bubbly track that concludes the album.
And
who would have thought that the soundtrack producers were
considerate enough to include three enjoyable score tracks
composed by Christophe Beck (The Hangover, The Pink Panther
2)? With an impression that this album would probably be a
collection of forgettable pop songs, this decision definitely
made us want to convince you that this CD is really worth
a spin in your player.
