ALBUM REVIEW:
The last time we heard Brazilian composer Antonio Pinto’s
work was back in 2002, when he composed the fiercely energetic
music for Fernando Meirelles’ City of God. The World
Soundtrack Award winner is back with his latest score for
the not-so-well-received film based on Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s
novel. Gone in this work is the ferocious zest, but the luscious
ethnicity of the distinctive Latin flavour still remains.
The
42-minute album features original songs by Colombian singer
“Laudry Service” Shakira, and they definitely
leave lasting impressions. “Hay Amores” is seductively
beautiful, the Golden Globe-nominated “Despedida”
is emotionally empowering while “Pienso En Ti”
is mysteriously enchanting. Accompanied by Shakira’s
signature vocals, these three tunes are just a prelude to
Pinto’s bittersweet score which makes for melancholic
listening even if you haven’t watched the film.
There
may be no bombastic themes in this soundtrack, but the mesmerizing
strings and guitars are dreamy enough for the romantic die-hards.
“Love” lingers around alluringly with its few
laidback yet memorable notes, where the album’s main
theme grows on you. Tracks like “Florentino” and
“The Girls” evoke similar sentiments. There is
a wide variety of moods created in this album. “Divided
Love” has a Casanova-like melody, “Escolastica”
contains the more dramatic elements, while “Sex Drums”
(you cannot help but notice the track title) is a tribal-like
cue that is, well, entertaining to listen to. The tracks are
brief in runtime, with many of them running at one-odd minute
each. This makes for easy listening for the casual listener.
The
album may be easy on the ears, but it warrants a few listens
for you to fully appreciate its tenderness. Do not let the
movie’s unkind reviews influence you, because this is
a soundtrack that should not slip by you, especially if you
love gentle and affectionate romantic music scores.
